Obtaining an additional exchange item during a transaction utilizing an exchange item

A marketplace server of an exchange item marketplace network comprises:

• memory;
• an interface;
• and
• a processing module operably coupled to the memory and the interface, wherein the processing module is operable to:
• receive, via the interface, an exchange item request from a buyer computing device of the exchange item marketplace network, wherein the exchange item request indicates the buyer computing device is initiating a transaction with a point of sale device, wherein an exchange item associated with the exchange item request is stored in a digital wallet of the buyer computing device;
• determine a fraud score associated with the exchange item request;
• when the fraud score exceeds a threshold:
• access a virtual marketplace of exchange items, wherein the virtual marketplace of exchange items includes a plurality of available exchange items;
• identify a second exchange item from the plurality of available exchange items that would complete the transaction during a first time period;
• when the second exchange item is unavailable:
• provide the buyer computing device a notification to obtain a new exchange item from a brand server associated with the exchange item;
• obtain new exchange item information from the buyer computing device;
• and
• based on the new exchange item information, issue the new exchange item to the buyer computing device, wherein the buyer computing device is operable to utilize the new exchange item to complete the transaction.
