Abstract
A system for controlling playback of various types of content includes a first computing device that provides a unique identifier to a second computing device to establish an association there between. By virtue of the established association, the second computing device can send one or more messages to the first computing device, the one or more messages referencing a piece of content associated with a first media playing element of a plurality of media playing elements, and one or more commands corresponding to the first media playing element. The first computing device can select the first media playing element based on the received one or more messages, and control how the first media playing element plays the referenced piece of content utilizing the one or more commands.
Claims16
A system for controlling content presentation via voice commands, comprising:
- a first personal computing device;
- a second personal computing device;
- a television;
- a server system capable of forming connections between the personal computing devices and the television;
- wherein the first personal computing device comprises:
- a display screen;
- an input device;
- memory containing a downloadable application;
- a network interface capable of coupling the first personal computing device to a network;
- a processor;
- wherein the processor of the first personal computing device is configured by the downloadable application to:
- receive, via the input device of the first personal computing device, information associated with the television;
- and
- send, via the network interface of the first personal computing device, a message based upon the information associated with the television to the server system;
- wherein the server system comprises:
- at least one database server capable of maintaining a database in which connections between groups of personal computing devices and display devices are recorded;
- and
- at least one server configured to:
- receive, via the Internet, the message sent by the first personal computing device;
- and
- in response to receipt of the message sent by the first personal computing device, cause a connection between a group of personal computing devices and the television to be recorded in the database, where the group of personal computing devices comprises the first computing device and the second computing device;
- wherein the second personal computing device comprises:
- a processor,
- a network interface;
- memory capable of storing executable instructions;
- and
- an input device capable of receiving user input, where the input device is capable of receiving user input in the form of speech;
- wherein the executable instructions are capable of configuring the processor of the second personal computing device to:
- receive, via the input device of the second personal computing device, user input in the form of speech, where the user input is a request to play user-selected content on the television;
- and
- send, in response to the speech input, a message identifying the user-selected content and the television to the server system;
- wherein the at least one server within the server system is further configured to:
- receive, via the Internet, the message sent by the second personal computing device;
- verify that a connection between the second personal computing device and the television is recorded within the database;
- convert the message sent by the second personal computing device into a command to play the user-selected content, where the command to play the user-selected content includes a transmission code comprising an identifier for a specific media player and an identifier for the user-selected content;
- and
- send the command to the television via the Internet;
- wherein the television comprises:
- a processor,
- a network interface;
- memory capable of storing the specific media player, and
- a display screen;
- wherein the specific media player, in response to receipt by the television of the transmission code, is capable of causing the processor of the television to:
- stream the user-selected content from a content provider associated with the specific media player via the Internet;
- and
- cause the user-selected content to play on the display screen of the television.
A system for controlling content presentation via voice commands, comprising:
- a controller device;
- a receiver device;
- a server system capable of forming a connection between the controller device and the receiver device;
- wherein the controller device comprises:
- a processor,
- a network interface;
- memory capable of storing executable instructions;
- and
- an input device capable of receiving user input, where the input device is capable of receiving user input in the form of speech;
- wherein the executable instructions are capable of configuring the processor of the controller device to:
- receive, via the input device, user input in the form of speech;
- and
- send a message based upon the speech input to the server system;
- wherein the server system comprises a plurality of computer servers including:
- at least one database server capable of maintaining a database in which a connection between the controller device and the receiver device is recorded, where:
- the database comprises at least one table in which connections between groups of controller devices and receiver devices are recorded;
- the connection between the controller device and the receiver device is recorded in the database as a connection between a group of controller devices comprising the controller device and the receiver device;
- and
- at least one server configured to:
- receive, via the Internet, the message sent by the controller device;
- convert the message sent by the controller device into a command to play a piece of content;
- and
- send the command to play the piece of content to the receiver device via the Internet;
- wherein the server system is configured to verify, prior to the at least one server sending the command to the receiver device, that the connection between the controller device and the receiver device is recorded within the database, where the verification is performed based upon the connection recorded in the database between the group of controller devices comprising the controller device and the receiver device;
- wherein the receiver device comprises:
- a processor,
- a network interface;
- memory capable of storing a specific media player, and
- wherein the specific media player, in response to receipt by the receiver device of the command from the server system, is capable of causing the processor of the receiver device to:
- stream the piece of content from a content provider via the Internet;
- and
- cause the piece of content to play.
