Systems and methods for optimizing delivery of content recommendations

A computer-implemented method comprising:

• detecting that first content is being displayed at a client device;
• while the first content is being displayed, identifying an alert comprising a recommendation for second content comprising a sporting event based at least in part on:
• identifying attributes of the sporting event, wherein the attributes comprise a sport type of the sporting event and a team or player competing in the sporting event;
• determining, based at least in part on an amount of time remaining in the sporting event and a current score associated with the sporting event, that the sporting event is a close game in a late stage, given the sport type of the sporting event;
• and
• determining that the at least one of the sport type of the sporting event, the team or player competing in the sporting event, or the determination of the close game corresponds to a preference indicated in a profile associated with the client device;
• based at least in part on the detecting, determining that the second content is not being displayed at the client device;
• and
• providing for display the alert at the client device.
