Method and apparatus for extending 13C capability across multiple platforms and devices over USB-C connection

A system comprising:

• a processor coupled to a storage device;
• a first interface and a second interface configured to couple a first device and a second device to one another, the first interface comprising an Improved Inter-Integrated Circuit (I3C ) interface, wherein:
• the first interface is configured to communicate low-speed messages and low-speed data between the first device and the second device,
• the second interface is configured to communicate high-speed data between the first device and the second device,
• the first device comprises (i) an extension controller configured to communicatively couple one or more I3C target devices of the first device to one or more I3C target devices of the second device via the first interface, and (ii) a primary I3C controller that is separate from the extension controller, and
• the extension controller facilitates an extension of a first device I3C bus and a second device I3C bus to enable the primary I3C controller to directly access the one or more I3C target devices in the first device and the one or more I3C target devices in the second device as a single I3C bus, and
• a first gateway device of the first device, the first gateway device configured to appear as a passthrough device to a second gateway device of the second device over the first interface to facilitate the primary I3C controller assigning distinct addresses to the one or more I3C target devices of the first device and the one or more I3C target devices of the second device on the single I3C bus.
