Display with a privacy viewing mode including two backlights

A display comprising:

• a transmissive spatial light modulator with an active area and a privacy region of the active area smaller than the active area;
• a first backlight configured to illuminate the active area of the transmissive spatial light modulator;
• and
• a second backlight positioned between the first backlight and the transmissive spatial light modulator, the second backlight comprising a film-based lightguide and one or more light sources configured to emit light into the film-based lightguide such that the light propagates to a light mixing region of the film-based lightguide positioned along an optical path between the one or more light sources and a light emitting region of the film-based lightguide, the light emitted from the light emitting region illuminates the privacy region of the active area of the transmissive spatial light modulator and does not illuminate all of the active area, wherein light output from the light emitting region has spatially varying angular light output.

A display comprising:

• a transmissive spatial light modulator with an active area and a privacy region of the active area smaller than the active area;
• a first backlight configured to illuminate the active area of the transmissive spatial light modulator;
• and
• a second backlight positioned between the first backlight and the transmissive spatial light modulator, the second backlight comprising a film-based lightguide and one or more light sources configured to emit light into the film-based lightguide such that the light propagates to a light mixing region of the film-based lightguide positioned along an optical path between the one or more light sources and a light emitting region of the film-based lightguide defined by low angle directing features that redirect the light from the one or more light sources out of the film-based lightguide, the light emitted from the light emitting region of the film-based lightguide is redirected by light turning features of a film positioned to receive light from the light emitting region and illuminates the privacy region of the active area of the transmissive spatial light modulator and does not illuminate all of the active area, wherein the light turning features of the film extend across all of the active area.
