Example embodiments provide an acoustic pulse source apparatus comprising a pressure cylinder surrounding a pressurized volume, a floating piston slidably mounted in the pressure cylinder, a vented volume with a dividing wall to the pressurized volume, and a bumper attached to the dividing wall, wherein the floating piston is configured to impact the bumper to end a piston stroke by the floating piston. The acoustic pulse source apparatus may further comprise vent valves in the dividing wall, vent valve seats configured to provide a seal surface for the vent valves, an actuator piston connected to the vent valves, a return spring between the actuator piston and the dividing wall, a solenoid air valve in a baseline closed configuration, and a pressure pipe configured to provide high pressure air from the pressurized volume to the solenoid air valve. A floating piston movement may generate acoustic energy.
