Abstract
Systems and methods for automatic magnetic variation detection include receiving, from a magnetic variation database, first magnetic variation data associated with an airport; determining second magnetic variation data based on a published approach associated with the airport and one or more trajectory measurements as an aircraft flies along a centerline of a localizer signal of the airport; determining a difference between the first magnetic variation data and the second magnetic variation data; and if the difference satisfies a deviation threshold, updating the magnetic variation database based at least on the second magnetic variation data.

A device comprising:
- one or more processors configured to:
- receive, from a magnetic variation database, first magnetic variation data associated with an airport;
- plot a first course for an instrument landing system of an aircraft, the first course based at least on the first magnetic variation data and associated with an instrument-assisted landing at the airport;
- determine second magnetic variation data based on published approach data associated with the airport and one or more trajectory measurements as an aircraft flies along a centerline of a localizer antenna signal of the airport;
- determine a difference between the first magnetic variation data and the second magnetic variation data;
- and
- if the difference satisfies a deviation threshold, update the magnetic variation database based at least on the second magnetic variation data and plot a second course for the instrument landing system of the aircraft based at least on the second magnetic variation data and associated with the instrument-assisted landing at the airport.
A method comprising:
- receiving, by a processor, from a magnetic variation database, first magnetic variation data associated with an airport;
- plotting, by the processor, a first course for an instrument landing system of an aircraft, the first course based at least on the first magnetic variation data and associated with an instrument-assisted landing at the airport;
- determining, by the processor, second magnetic variation data based on published approach data associated with the airport and one or more trajectory measurements associated with the first course as an aircraft flies along a centerline of a localizer antenna signal of the airport;
- determining, by the processor, a difference between the first magnetic variation data and the second magnetic variation data;
- and
- if the difference satisfies a deviation threshold, updating the magnetic variation database based at least on the second magnetic variation data and plotting a second course for the instrument landing system of the aircraft based at least on the second magnetic variation data and associated with the instrument-assisted landing at the airport.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:
- receive, from a magnetic variation database, first magnetic variation data associated with an airport;
- plot a first course for an instrument landing system of an aircraft, the first course based at least on the first magnetic variation data and associated with an instrument-assisted landing at the airport;
- determine second magnetic variation data based on published approach data associated with the airport and one or more trajectory measurements associated with the first course as an aircraft flies along a centerline of a localizer antenna signal of the airport;
- determine a difference between the first magnetic variation data and the second magnetic variation data;
- and
- if the difference satisfies a deviation threshold, update the magnetic variation database based at least on the second magnetic variation data and plot a second course for the instrument landing system of the aircraft based at least on the second magnetic variation data and associated with the instrument-assisted landing at the airport.
