Laser-phosphor light source with improved lifetime

A light generating system comprising a first light generating arrangement, a second light generating arrangement, a luminescent element, a diffuser element, a beam direction control system, and a control system, wherein:

• the first light generating arrangement is configured to generate a first beam (B1) of first device light, wherein the first light generating arrangement comprises a first solid state laser light source;
• the second light generating arrangement is configured to generate a second beam (B2) of second device light, wherein the second light generating arrangement comprises a second solid state laser light source;
• the first device light comprises a first polarization (P1) and the second device light comprises the first polarization (P1);
• the luminescent element comprises a luminescent material, wherein the luminescent material is able to convert the first device light and/or the second device light received by the luminescent material into luminescent material light;
• the diffuser element is configured to diffuse first device light- and/or the second device light received by the diffuser element, thereby providing diffused light;
• the beam direction control system is configured in a light receiving relationship with the first light generating arrangement and the second light generating arrangement, and configured to direct:
• in a first operational mode of the beam direction control system (i) a first pump part of the first device light and/or the second device light, having a first pump intensity, to the luminescent element, and (ii) a first diffuser part of the first device light and/or the second device light, having a first diffuser part intensity (Id1), to the diffuser element;
• and
• in a second operational mode of the beam direction control system (i) a second pump part of the first device light and/or the second device light, having a second pump intensity (Ip2), to the luminescent element, and (ii) a second diffuser part of the first device light and/or the second device light, having a second diffuser part intensity (Id2), to the diffuser element;
• the first pump intensity (Ip1) and the second pump intensity (Ip2) have different relative contributions of the first device light and/or the second device light;
• and the first diffuser part intensity (Id1) and the second diffuser part intensity (Id2) have different relative contributions of the first device light and/or the second device light;
• the beam direction control system further comprises a reflective polarizer, configured to reflect light having a first polarization (P1), and the beam direction control system is further configured to direct:
• in the first operational mode of the beam direction control system (i) first device light, having the first polarization (P1), to the luminescent element, and (ii) second device light, having the first polarization (P1), to the diffuser element;
• and
• in the second operational mode of the beam direction control system (i) second device light, having the first polarization (P1), to the luminescent element, and (ii) first device light, having the first polarization (P1), to the diffuser element;
• the control system is configured to control the first light generating arrangement, the second light generating arrangement, and the beam direction control system;
• and
• the light generating system is configured to generate system light comprising the luminescent material light and the diffused light.
