Abstract
A structural assembly using at least one anchor assembly for attaching a first structure to a second structure is described. The anchor assembly has a body having a first face and a second face. The first face is transverse to the second face and has an elongate slot. The second face has a through hole. The body is fabricated from a material that fails at a temperature in excess of 1,000° F. A fastening member is positioned in the elongate slot for connecting the first face to the first structure and for sliding engagement with the elongate slot in response to relative movement of the first structure and the second structure.
Claims17
A structural assembly comprising:
- a frame assembly comprised of a plurality of building studs secured to and between a base stud plate and an upper stud plate and traverse to the base stud plate and upper stud plate;
- a firewall barrier assembly comprising a continuous planar surface adjacent the frame assembly;
- a plurality of anchors wherein each anchor comprises a body having a first face and a second face, the first face being transverse to the second face, the first face having an elongate slot and the second face having a through hole;
- and,
- a fastening member positioned in the elongate slot connecting the first face of each of the plurality of anchors to the frame assembly, the second face of each anchor being connected to the firewall barrier;
- wherein a bearing force is transferred from the firewall barrier to the frame assembly through the body of each anchor, and the fastening member slides in the elongate slot along a second direction in response to relative movement as a result of differential settlement between the frame assembly and the firewall barrier.
A method for creating a firewall barrier assembly comprising:
- creating a first frame assembly comprised of a plurality of building studs secured to and between, and transverse to, a base stud plate and an upper stud plate;
- creating a second frame assembly comprised of a plurality of building studs secured to and between, and transverse to, a base stud plate and an upper stud plate;
- positioning a firewall barrier between the first frame assembly and the second frame assembly;
- and
- attaching the firewall barrier to at least one of either the first frame assembly and the second frame assembly using a plurality of anchors, wherein each anchor comprises:
- a body having a first face and a second face, the first face being transverse to the second face, the first face having an elongate slot having a length dimension and a width dimension, the length dimension being greater than the width dimension, the length dimension extending generally parallel to a plane defined by the second face, and the second face having a through hole;
- and
- a grommet assembly slidably disposed within the elongate slot, the grommet assembly comprising a grommet and a washer adhered to a surface of the grommet;
- wherein the second face of the body of each anchor in the plurality of anchors is secured to the firewall barrier at a fixed position and the first face of the body is secured to at least one of either the first frame assembly and the second frame assembly while allowing for sliding engagement of the grommet with the elongate slot in response to relative movement as a result of differential settlement between the firewall barrier and the at least one of either the first frame assembly and the second frame assembly after the body has been attached to the first structure and the second structure, and wherein the assembly has a sound transfer coefficient greater than 50.
