Abstract
A hydrogen electrochemical system includes a cell including a membrane electrolyte and catalyst-loaded catalyst layers and a deionization subsystem including a selectively binding chelator binding one or more metal ions, the selectively binding chelator having pKa value(s) at which its hydrogen(s) dissociate, the pKa value(s) being different from pH value(s) of the cell in operation, the deionization subsystem being located in a water recirculation loop of the cell.
Claims20
A hydrogen electrochemical system comprising:
- a cell including a membrane electrolyte and catalyst-loaded catalyst layers;
- and
- a deionization subsystem including
- a selectively binding chelator binding one or more metal ions, the selectively binding chelator having pKa value(s) at which its hydrogen(s) dissociate, the pKa value(s) being different from pH value(s) of the cell in operation,
- the deionization subsystem being located in at least one of the catalyst layers of the cell and in a water recirculation loop of the cell.
An electrolyzer system comprising:
- a water input source supplying a water input stream;
- an electrolyzer cell including a membrane electrolyte and catalyst-loaded catalyst layers downstream from the water input source;
- and
- a deionization subsystem located in at least one of the catalyst layers adjacent the membrane electrolyte of the electrolyzer cell, the deionization subsystem including a chelator binding one or more metal ions present in the water input stream, the chelator having pKa values different from any pH values of an electrolyzer cell in operation.
An electrolyzer deionization device comprising:
- a reservoir with a chelator having one or more dissociation constant pKa values greater or lower than pH values of an electrolyzer cell in operation such that a volume of protons in the electrolyzer cell remains unreduced in presence of the chelator,
- the chelator being disposed in at least one catalyst layer of the electrolyzer cell and configured to selectively bind one or more metal ions while remaining substantially non-binding to hydrogen ions within the pH range of the electrolyzer cell.
