Abstract
The disclosed technology relates to a lubricant composition for automotive or industrial gears, as well as axles and bearings, the automotive or industrial gear oil containing an oil of lubricating viscosity, an optional phosphate and/or thiophosphate compound, a particular sulfurized olefin, either a metal thiophosphate compound, such as zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, a thiadiazole functionalized dispersant, or a mixture thereof, and a hydroxyalkylamine containing booster, as well as a method of improving automotive or industrial gear operating efficiency and temperature by lubricating such automotive or industrial gears with the automotive or industrial gear oil.
Claims11
An automotive or industrial gear oil comprising
- a. an oil of lubricating viscosity;
- b. 2 to 5 wt % of a sulfurized olefin comprising a mixture of sulfurized olefins of formula R1-Sx-R2 where R1 and R2 separately are derived from 3 to 5 carbon atom containing olefins and x is an integer of between 3 and 7, with the proviso that the sulfurized olefin will have a sulfur content of from about 40 to about 50 wt %,
- c. 600 to 3,000 ppm of at least one hydroxyalkylamine containing booster selected from bis[2-hydroxyethyl]soyamine, bis[2-hydroxyethyl]-tallow-amine, bis[2-hydroxyethyl]oleyl-amine, bis[2-hydroxyethyl]octadecylamine and mixtures thereof, and
- d. at least one of:
- i. 0.1 to 2 wt % of a metal alkylthiophosphate,
- ii. 0.35 to 4 wt % of a thiadiazole-functionalized dispersant,
- iii. mixtures of (i) and (ii)
- wherein the lubricant comprises a total sulfur level 1 to about 3 wt. %.
