Abstract
A system and method of producing synthesis gas and bio-oil from biomass. The method comprises producing, in a gasification unit, synthesis gas from a carbonaceous feedstock, optionally cooling the synthesis gas discharged from the gasification unit, channeling the synthesis gas towards a hydrothermal processing unit, wherein the hydrothermal processing unit is configured to process a biomass feedstock contained in a pressurized water stream, transferring, in the hydrothermal processing unit, heat from the synthesis gas to the biomass feedstock, and producing a hydrothermal product from the biomass feedstock in the pressurized water stream.
Claims25
A method of producing bio-oil from biomass, the method comprising:
- producing, in a gasification unit, synthesis gas from a carbonaceous feedstock;
- optionally cooling the synthesis gas discharged from the gasification unit;
- channeling the synthesis gas into a hydrothermal processing unit, wherein the hydrothermal processing unit processes a biomass feedstock contained in a pressurized water stream;
- transferring heat from the synthesis gas to a product recirculation stream in the hydrothermal processing unit in at least one heat exchanger to provide a cooled synthesis gas stream and a heated product recirculation stream;
- and
- producing a hydrothermal product from at least a portion of the heated product recirculation stream;
- further comprising, prior to the producing, combining at least a portion of the biomass feedstock contained in pressurized water stream with the heated product recirculation stream to provide a combined feed stream and introducing the combined feed stream into a hydrothermal pressure vessel;
- withdrawing an initial hydrothermal product stream from the hydrothermal pressure vessel and dividing the initial hydrothermal product stream into a first portion and a second portion, wherein the first portion comprises the product recirculation stream and the second portion comprises the hydrothermal product, and
- wherein the hydrothermal product comprises at least one product chosen from synthesis gas, crude bio-oil, water and dissolved solids, or solid hydro char.
