Abstract
Devices and/or methods for treating sleep disordered breathing may include stimulation of a single nerve, multiple nerves, as well as other tissues relating to upper airway patency.
Claims11
A method of treating sleep disordered breathing comprising:
- sensing, via at least one sensing element, respiratory cycles wherein each respiratory cycle includes an inspiratory phase and an expiratory phase;
- and
- applying electrical stimulation, based on the sensed respiratory cycles and via a first stimulation element, to an infrahyoid muscle-innervating nerve according to a first stimulation protocol including stimulation cycles of alternating stimulation periods and non-stimulation periods, wherein a first stimulation period coincides with the inspiratory phase of a respective one of the sensed respiratory cycles and, based on an upper airway patency hysteresis effect parameter, the stimulation protocol skips at least one respiratory cycle before applying a second stimulation period which coincides with the inspiratory phase of a later respective one of the respiratory cycles.
