Abstract
A medical device with an expandable element and expandable tubular sleeve surrounding at least a portion of the expandable element which influences the rate, shape and/or force required to expand the expandable element and methods for use in a body lumen are provided.
Claims21
A medical device comprising:
- (a) an elongated tubular body having a proximal end and a distal end;
- (b) an expandable element at the distal end of the elongated tubular body;
- (c) an expandable tubular sleeve affixed around the expandable element, the expandable tubular sleeve comprising a single continuous material that defines a plurality of discrete zones along a length of the expandable element, the plurality of discrete zones including a first zone having a first radial strength, a second zone having a second radial strength, and a third zone having a third radial strength, the second zone positioned between the first and third zones and having a lower radial strength than the first and third zones;
- wherein the expandable tubular sleeve is configured in an expansion sequence dictated by the first, second, and third radial strengths of the plurality of discrete zones, such that the second zone expands at a first expansion pressure from an uninflated state prior to the first and third zones expanding, and the first and third zones subsequently expand at a second expansion pressure that is greater than the first expansion pressure.

A balloon catheter comprising:
- a catheter body;
- a balloon coupled to the catheter body;
- and
- an expandable tubular sleeve affixed around the balloon, the expandable tubular sleeve comprising a single continuous material that defines a plurality of zones along a length of the balloon, the plurality of discrete zones including a first zone having a first radial strength, a second zone having a second radial strength, and a third zone having a third radial strength, the second zone positioned between the first and third zones and having a lower radial strength than the first and third zones, such that the first, second, and third zones are configured to expand by:
- expanding the second zone at a first expansion pressure from an uninflated state prior to the first and third zones expanding, and
- subsequently expanding the first and third zones at a second expansion pressure that is greater than the first expansion pressure.
