Abstract
Methods and apparatus to reduce deadspace in syringes and other devices with the use of volume displacing members that occupy space within one or more interior spaces of such devices. The volume displacing members are also equipped with one or more internal flow passages that facilitate a flow of a fluid through it. The volume displacing members are also adapted to cooperate with features of the devices that house them to form air-tight and liquid-tight seals that at least partially determine a fluid pathway through the devices.
Claims9
A syringe comprising:
- a hollow barrel configured to store a liquid or gas in an interior cavity therein;
- a male nozzle extending distally from the hollow barrel and having an interior cavity defined by an interior wall and a distal opening of the male nozzle;
- a female luer hub having a distal interior cavity with an interior distal end wall with an aperture in fluid communication with a hollow lumen of a needle, the distal interior cavity being arranged between the interior distal end wall and a portion of the male nozzle;
- and
- a volume displacing member, disposed inside the interior cavity of the male nozzle, that is configured to reduce a cubic volumetric capacity inside the interior cavity of the male nozzle available for accommodating the liquid or gas, the volume displacing member including a body having an outside wall that includes an opening of a first through passage that is located distal to a closed proximal end of the volume displacing member, the first through passage being in fluid communication with a second through passage that is located distal to the first through passage, the second through passage terminating at an opening in a distal end wall of a distal end of the volume displacing member, the opening of the first through passage being in fluid communication with the interior cavity of the male nozzle, the body of the volume displacing member including the outside wall forming a first liquid-tight and air-tight seal with the interior wall of the distal opening of the male luer nozzle, the outside wall of the distal end of the volume-displacing member forming a second liquid-tight and air-tight seal with an inside wall of the female luer hub;
- wherein a flow passage for the liquid or gas extends through the syringe, the female luer hub and the needle, the flow passage bypassing the distal interior cavity of the female luer hub.
