Abstract
A novel embodiment of a pump mechanism, for example, of the type that would be used in a wearable drug delivery system, comprises, in a preferred embodiment, a reservoir, a plunger, disposed within the reservoir and driven by a coiled flexible linkage connected to a drive mechanism, such that a force imparted by the drive mechanism causes the coiled flexible linkage to uncoil, causing a linear translation of the plunger through the reservoir to force a liquid drug contained within the reservoir through a fluid port to a patient.
Claims15
A pump mechanism comprising:
- a reservoir comprising a tube-like structure having a first end and a second end, the second end configured with a fluid path;
- a plunger, disposed in the reservoir, the plunger configured translate longitudinally within the reservoir toward the second end;
- a drive mechanism;
- a pair of rollers, at least one of which is a driven roller that is rotationally driven by the drive mechanism;
- a flexible linkage between the drive mechanism and the plunger;
- and
- a clutch mechanism, disposed between the drive mechanism and the driven roller, so as to enable disengagement of the drive mechanism from the driven roller and rotation of the pair of rollers in a reverse direction.
The pump mechanism 12, wherein the ratchet wheel is rotated by an expansion and contraction of a wire composed of a shape memory alloy.
The pump mechanism 12, wherein the ratchet wheel is rotated by motor.
