A method of treating cancer in a subject in need thereof. The method includes providing an anticancer drug which is cationic, zwitterionic or not charged, providing a boron cluster which is halogenated, mixing the boron cluster and the anticancer drug so that the boron cluster and the anticancer drug together form a non-covalent complex mixture, and administering the non-covalent complex mixture to the subject so that the boron cluster acts as a transmembrane carrier to transport the anticancer drug across a membrane of a cell or a vesicle in the subject. The boron cluster has a globular shape or an ellipsoidal shape. The boron cluster is a mononuclear boron cluster. The boron cluster is free of a pendant group, the pendant group being defined as any group which is linked to a core of the boron cluster except for hydrogen, a halogen, a methyl, and/or the anticancer drug.
