Abstract
Devices for and related methods of treating a subject having a neurological injury to prevent or mitigate secondary injury are described. In an example, the devices include a base and a plurality of microneedles protruding from the base, the microneedles including a biocompatible and biodegradable matrix, and a neurologically active ingredient disposed within the matrix. In an example, a portion of the plurality of microneedles is shaped to penetrate the dura when the device is placed in contact with the dura.
Claims24
A device for delivering a neurologically active ingredient to a dura of a subject, the device comprising:
- a base comprising a first surface that is adjacent to a surface of the dura;
- a plurality of microneedles protruding from the first surface of the base and into the dura, wherein each of the microneedles comprise:
- a biocompatible and biodegradable matrix;
- and
- a neurologically active ingredient disposed within the matrix;
- and
- a locking mechanism,
- wherein the density of microneedles on the first surface of the base ranges from 5 microneedles to 9 microneedles per 100 mm2, and wherein the distance between any two adjacent microneedle centers is from 4.5 mm to 13 mm, and
- wherein the plurality of microneedles have a height ranging from 500 μm to 5 mm.
