Abstract
An orthopedic implant assembly includes a bone plate configured to couple the implant assembly to a fractured bone. A piezoelectric component is disposed on the bone plate and configured to produce an electrical output corresponding to a load the piezoelectric component is subjected to. When the implant is in contact with the fractured bone the electrical output is transmitted to the fractured bone.
Claims25
A kit to form an orthopedic implant assembly, the kit comprising:
- a bone plate having a distal surface configured to contact a fractured bone and a proximal surface opposite the distal surface;
- a first component having a conical-frustum-shape with a continuous taper between a distal side and a proximal side and including a piezoelectric material and having a first surface that, when in the orthopedic implant assembly, is non-planar;
- and
- a second component having a second surface, the second surface being non-planar, wherein, when in the orthopedic implant assembly, the first component is configured to be between the bone plate and the second component and the first surface conforms to and is adjacent to the second surface.

An orthopedic implant assembly comprising:
- a bone plate having a distal surface configured to contact a fractured bone, a proximal surface opposite the distal surface, and one or more openings extending between the proximal surface and the distal surface;
- a first component comprising one or more rings comprising a piezoelectric material and having a frustoconical shape with a continuous taper between a proximal side and a distal side and a first surface;
- and
- a second component comprising one or more fasteners having a second surface, wherein the one or more rings are configured to be disposed in the one or more openings between the bone plate and the one or more fasteners and the first surface is configured to be adjacent to and conform to the second surface.
1 more element
An orthopedic implant assembly comprising:
- a bone plate having a distal surface configured to contact a fractured bone, a proximal surface opposite the distal surface, and a plurality of openings extending between the proximal surface and the distal surface;
- a plurality of rings, each ring of the plurality of rings comprising a piezoelectric material and having a frustoconical shape and a concave-conical-frustum-shaped ring surface;
- and
- a plurality of fasteners, each fastener having a convex-conical-frustum-shaped bearing surfaces at an underside of heads of respective ones of the plurality of fasteners,
- wherein the plurality of rings are configured to be disposed in the plurality of openings between the bone plate and the plurality of fasteners, with the convex-conical-frustum-shaped bearing surfaces of the plurality of fasteners deforming respective concave-conical-frustum-shaped ring surfaces to conform to the convex-conical-frustum-shaped bearing surfaces of the plurality of fasteners, while the plurality of fasteners extend through the plurality of openings to attach the orthopedic implant assembly to a bone.
