## Abstract

A bone anchor system for securing a rod to a receiver with upright arms defining an open channel. Each upright arm includes a plurality of upwardly-facing arcuate surfaces, a horizontally elongated arcuate tool engagement groove below the upwardly-facing surface, and an inwardly-facing surface extending downward from the upwardly-facing surface. The tool engagement groove includes an upwardly-facing upper surface and outwardly-facing groove surface within the horizontally elongated arcuate tool engagement groove.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A bone anchor system intended for securing an elongate rod to a head of a shank via a closure top, the shank including a threaded anchor portion opposite the head configured for implantation into a bone of a patient, the bone anchor system comprising:
tooling having a pair of spaced apart receiver attachment portions adjacent a lower end thereof; and
a receiver comprising a vertical centerline axis, a base portion defining an internal cavity configured to receive the head of the shank with the shank extending downward through a lower opening, and a pair of upright arms integrally formed with and extending upward from the base portion to define an open channel configured to receive the elongate rod and communicating with the internal cavity to define a central bore, the upright arms including upper portions having a plurality of upwardly-facing arcuate surfaces centered about the vertical centerline axis, opposing internal surfaces extending between a forward-facing surface and a backward-facing surface of each upright arm, upper outwardly-facing curvate surfaces extending downward from at least one of the upwardly-facing arcuate surfaces, and inwardly-facing arcuate surfaces spaced outwardly and apart from the opposing internal surfaces, the upright arms further including:
a discontinuous helically wound guide and advancement structure formed into an upper portion of the opposing internal surfaces of the upright arms and centered about the vertical centerline axis to define at least a portion of the central bore of the receiver, the guide and advancement structure extending below the inwardly-facing arcuate surfaces;
arcuate tool engagement grooves formed in the upright arms and spaced outwardly with respect to the opposing internal surfaces and configured to at least partially receive the receiver attachment portions, the arcuate tool engagement grooves including upwardly-facing groove surfaces spaced a fixed distance below the upwardly-facing arcuate surfaces of the upright arms and outwardly-facing groove surfaces opposite the opposing internal surfaces, the upwardly-facing groove surfaces and the outwardly-facing groove surfaces extending to the forward-facing surfaces and the backward-facing surfaces of the upright arms; and
opposite vertical tool-engagement slots extending at least partially between the plurality of upwardly-facing arcuate surfaces of the upright arms and the arcuate tool engagement grooves,
wherein when the receiver attachment portions of the tooling are positioned on the receiver, the upper portions of each upright arm are configured to at least partially engage arcuate extending engagement surfaces at the lower ends of the receiver attachment portions of the tooling so as to inhibit outward spreading of the pair of spaced apart receiver attachment portions.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The bone anchor system of claim 1, wherein the inwardly-facing arcuate surfaces extend at least partially circumferentially between the forward-facing surface and the backward-facing surface of each respective upright arm.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The bone anchor system of claim 1, wherein the inwardly-facing arcuate surfaces are radially offset from a root surface of the discontinuous helically wound guide and advancement structure.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The bone anchor system of claim 1, wherein the opposite vertical tool-engagement slots are configured to engage the receiver attachment portions so as to inhibit rotation of the tooling relative to the receiver.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The bone anchor system of claim 1, wherein the opposite vertical tool-engagement slots intersect the arcuate tool engagement grooves.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The bone anchor system of claim 1, wherein the opposite vertical tool engagement slots comprise outwardly-facing surfaces so as to be spaced apart with respect to the opposing internal surfaces.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The bone anchor system of claim 1 and further comprising the closure top and the elongate rod, wherein the closure top is configured for positioning into the central bore of the receiver above the elongate rod positioned in the open channel and for rotatable engagement with the discontinuous helically wound guide and advancement structure so as to apply a downward force to lock the elongate rod in the receiver.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The bone anchor system of claim 1, wherein the upright arms comprise outer side surfaces with outwardly-facing planar side surface portions below the arcuate tool engagement grooves.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The bone anchor system of claim 1, further comprising a transition surface between the inwardly-facing arcuate surfaces of each of the plurality of upright arms and the discontinuous helically wound guide and advancement structure.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The bone anchor system of claim 9, wherein the transition surface is non-perpendicular to the inwardly-facing arcuate surfaces of each of the plurality of upright arms across a width thereof between the inwardly-facing arcuate surfaces and the discontinuous helically wound guide and advancement structure.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The bone anchor system of claim 1, wherein the arcuate extending engagement surfaces at the lower end of the tooling and the arcuate tool engagement grooves of the receiver are configured to provide for rotation of the receiver attachment portion of the tooling above a top surface of the elongate rod in both a clockwise direction and in a counter-clockwise direction.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The bone anchor system of claim 11, wherein each of the receiver attachment portions of the tooling further comprises at least one protrusion configured to engage a recess within the vertical tool-engagement slots.

### Claim 13 (depends on 1)

The bone anchor system of claim 1 and further comprising an open retaining ring positionable within the internal cavity formed into the base portion of the receiver.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

The bone anchor system of claim 13, wherein the open retaining ring is configured to capture the head of the shank within the internal cavity of the receiver, with the shank extending downward through the lower opening, prior to securing the elongate rod in a locked configuration with the closure top.
