Abstract
Braid-balls suitable for aneurysm occlusion and/or parent vessel occlusion/sacrifice (e.g., in treating neurovascular defects) are disclosed. Especially for aneurysm treatment, but also for either one of the aforementioned treatments, the form of the ball is very important. In particular, the density of the device is paramount in applications where braid itself is intended to moderate or stop blood flow—allowing thrombosis within a volume formed by the ball.
Claims14
An embolic device for treatment of an aneurysm of a patient's vasculature, the device comprising:
- a braid configured to be positioned within a cavity of the aneurysm, the braid having an interior volume and comprising a plurality of woven filaments that are secured relative to each other at proximal and distal end portions of the braid to form respective proximal and distal hubs, the braid having an intermediate portion between the proximal and distal end portions, wherein the proximal and distal hubs are disposed exterior to the interior volume and are inset towards the interior volume;
- and
- wherein the embolic device comprises (i) a radially constrained state configured for delivery through an elongate shaft in which the braid has a first length, and (ii) an expanded state in which the braid has a second length less than the first length, wherein the embolic device is configured to assume the expanded state when released from the elongate shaft and positioned within the cavity of the aneurysm, and
- wherein, in the expanded state, the entire braid has a generally globular shape such that a diameter of the braid increases towards the intermediate portion of the braid and decreases towards the proximal and distal end portions of the braid.
An embolic device for treatment of an aneurysm of a patient's vasculature, the device comprising:
- a single-layer braided structure configured to be positioned within a cavity of the aneurysm, the braided structure comprising an interior volume surrounded by a plurality of wires that are secured relative to each other at proximal and distal end portions of the structure to form respective proximal and distal hubs, the proximal and distal hubs disposed exterior to the interior volume;
- and
- wherein, the braided structure comprises an expanded shape comprising a proximal end portion, a distal end portion, and intermediate portion extending therebetween, wherein the intermediate portion is concave towards the interior volume and the distal and proximal end portions are convex towards the interior volume, such that the proximal and distal hubs are inset into the interior volume, and wherein a diameter of the braided structure increases towards the intermediate portion and decreases towards the proximal and distal end portions of the braided structure such that the interior volume is generally spherical.
An embolic device for treatment of an aneurysm of a patient's vasculature, the device comprising:
- a self-expandable braided structure configured to be positioned within a cavity of the aneurysm, the braided structure comprising a single layer of a plurality of filaments defining an interior volume of the braided structure, wherein the plurality of filaments are secured relative to each other via proximal and distal bands at proximal and distal end portions of the braided structure, respectively,
- wherein the braided structure comprises (a) a radially constrained state configured for delivery through a microcatheter, and (b) an expanded state in which the braided structure has a generally globular shape between the proximal and distal end portions of the braided structure and is longitudinally shortened relative to the radially constrained state, a diameter of the braided structure increases towards an intermediate portion of the braided structure and decreases towards the proximal and distal end portions of the braided structure, and the proximal and distal bands are inset towards the interior volume, wherein the braided structure is configured to assume the expanded state when released from the microcatheter and positioned within the cavity of the aneurysm;
- and
- wherein the plurality of filaments comprises between 96 and 288 filaments and at least some of the plurality of filaments are composite filaments comprising a radiopaque core material surrounded circumferentially by Nitinol.
