## Abstract

A radiation reduction system that includes a computer and an imaging device configured to provide an image of a subject during a medical procedure using electromagnetic radiation. A variety of inputs are accepted from the medical practitioner using the computer such as subject body type, weight, and the like. These user inputs are used by the computer to determine operating settings that are transmitted to the imaging device either manually, a wired connection or wirelessly. The calculated settings are useful to generate one or more medically useful images of the subject while significantly reducing the overall radiation exposure to the subject and/or the personnel and/or medical practitioner.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A system comprising:
an imaging device configured to capture an image of a subject using electromagnetic radiation, the imaging device having operating settings for controlling the imaging device; and
control logic configured to:
receive subject data corresponding to the subject;
automatically determine the operating settings based on:
the subject data, wherein the subject data comprises a physical characteristic of the subject;
wherein the operating settings comprise one or more of:
a peak kilovoltage, a tube current, or an exposure time; and wherein the operating settings include at least one original value of the peak kilovoltage, the tube current, or the exposure time, and at least one of the operating settings is modified from the original value to a modified value, such that the subject will be exposed to less radiation after the operating settings are adjusted to the modified value, while still obtaining a medically useable image; and
wherein the imaging device is further configured to, generate the medically usable image of the subject using the operating settings and deactivate at least one of: an auto exposure, an Auto/automatic exposure control, an auto contrast, an auto pulse, or an auto low dose setting of the imaging device, prior to generating the image.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the subject data further comprises an identification of a presence or an absence of a consideration that may affect image quality.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The system of claim 2, wherein the consideration is the subject having an implant, a pin, a screw, a prosthesis, an artificial joint, or a foreign material within the subject.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the subject data is one or more of the subject's sex, height, weight, patient body type, or any combination thereof.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the imaging device is further configured to transmit the operating settings to the imaging device.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the imaging device will automatically evaluate the image to determine if a medically usable image was produced and if a medically usable image was not produced, the imaging device will prompt a user to adjust one or more of the operating settings in order to improve subsequent images.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein after the image is generated, the control logic generates operating parameters to improve the quality of subsequent images.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, further comprising
a computer remotely located from the imaging device; and
a communication link between the imaging device and the computer, wherein the control logic is in the computer, and wherein the operating settings are transmitted from the computer to the imaging device using the communication link.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, wherein the communication link is wireless.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8 further comprising a server.

### Claim 11 (depends on 10)

The system of claim 10, wherein the server provides the operating settings in response to a request from the computer.

### Claim 12 (depends on 8)

The system of claim 8, wherein the computer includes a user interface and wherein the user interface is configured to accept the subject data.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The system of claim 12, wherein the user interface is further configured to accept information identifying a brand or manufacturer of the imaging device.

### Claim 14 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the operating settings is manually entered into the imaging device.

### Claim 15 (depends on 1)

A method of taking a medical image of a subject, the method comprising:
providing the system of claim 1;
positioning the subject in order to capture the medical image; and
controlling operation of the system to take the medical image and reduce radiation exposure to the subject.

### Claim 16

A system comprising:
an imaging device configured to capture an image of a subject using electromagnetic radiation, the imaging device having operating settings for controlling the imaging device; and
control logic configured to:
receive subject data corresponding to the subject;
determine the operating settings based on:
the subject data, wherein the subject data comprises a physical characteristic of the subject;
a specific type of imaging procedure to be performed,
a target location of the subject,
wherein the operating settings comprise one or more of:
a peak kilovoltage, a tube current, or an exposure time; and wherein the operating settings include at least one original value of the peak kilovoltage, the tube current, or the exposure time, and at least one of the operating settings is modified from the original value to a modified value, such that the subject will be exposed to less radiation after the operating settings are adjusted to the modified value; and
wherein the imaging device is further configured to generate the image of the subject using the operating settings and deactivate at least one of: an auto exposure, an Auto/automatic exposure control, an auto contrast, a pulse, and a low dose setting of the imaging device, prior to generating the image.

### Claim 17 (depends on 16)
