Abstract
A device and a method for metabolism monitoring of a user based on low-cost, energy-effective and ultra-compact metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensor are provided. The device provides information on metabolism/nutrition/physical activity of the user based on measuring the MOS sensor resistance proportional to a ratio of oxygen (O2) to carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in exhaled air.
Claims19
A device for metabolism monitoring, the device comprising:
- a metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensor positioned in an air flow path through the device for air exhaled or inhaled by a user and configured to output a signal corresponding to a ratio of carbon dioxide concentration in exhaled air to oxygen concentration in inhaled air;
- and
- a processor configured to:
- read the signal output by the MOS sensor,
- process the signal during successive inhalation and exhalation cycles of the user,
- identify, from the signal, a transition between inhalation and exhalation cycles,
- process the signal as a pulse of the MOS sensor for each inhalation or exhalation based on a temporal response characteristic of the MOS sensor by reconstructing rising and falling edges of the pulse of the signal,
- calculate an amplitude value between a steady state of the signal of the MOS sensor after the exhalation or before the inhalation and a saturation level of the signal, wherein the amplitude value corresponds to the ratio of carbon dioxide concentration in exhaled air to oxygen concentration in inhaled air, and wherein the reconstructing of the rising and falling edges compensates for a response delay and a signal overlap between successive inhalation and exhalation cycles of the MOS sensor,
- wherein the reconstructing of the rising and falling edges is performed based on the temporal response characteristic of the MOS sensor and separates signals corresponding to successive inhalation and exhalation cycles,
- wherein the amplitude value is determined based on the signal after compensation of the response delay and signal overlap,
- calculate a Respiratory Exchange Rate (RER) value representing a metabolism parameter based on the amplitude value of the signal output by the MOS sensor,
- wherein the RER value is generated based on the amplitude value after compensation of the response delay of the MOS sensor, and
- output a result of the metabolism monitoring to the user as text or as a number.
A method for metabolism monitoring, the method comprising:

- reading the signal output by the MOS sensor by a processor of the device for metabolism monitoring;
- processing the signal during successive inhalation and exhalation cycles of the user;
- identifying, from the signal, a transition between inhalation and exhalation cycles;
- processing the signal as a pulse of the MOS sensor for each inhalation or exhalation based on a temporal response characteristic of the MOS sensor by reconstructing rising and falling edges of the pulse of said signal;
- calculating an amplitude value between a steady state of the signal of the MOS sensor after the exhalation or before the inhalation and a saturation level of the signal, wherein the amplitude value corresponds to the ratio of carbon dioxide concentration in exhaled air to oxygen concentration in inhaled air, and wherein the reconstructing of the rising and falling edges compensates for a response delay and a signal overlap between successive inhalation and exhalation cycles of the MOS sensor,
- wherein the reconstructing of the rising and falling edges is performed based on the temporal response characteristic of the MOS sensor and separates signals corresponding to successive inhalation and exhalation cycles,
- wherein the amplitude value is determined based on the signal after compensation of the response delay and signal overlap;
- calculating a Respiratory Exchange Rate (RER) value representing a metabolism parameter based on the amplitude value of the signal output by the MOS sensor,
- wherein the RER value is generated based on the amplitude value after compensation of the response delay of the MOS sensor;
- and
- outputting a result of the metabolism monitoring to the user as text or as a number.
