Abstract
A state transition for a stream and a timing of when the state transition is detected with respect to a duration of a frame which is to be transmitted over the serial channel. The state transition and timing of the state transition is coded into a codeword which is inserted into a portion of a frame which is transmitted over the serial channel to transmit the stream over the serial channel.

A method comprising:
- receiving a stream for transmission over a serial channel;
- determining a bus state transition in the stream and a corresponding unit interval (UI) of a plurality of unit intervals when the bus state transition occurs in the stream,
- wherein the plurality of unit intervals defines a fixed duration of a frame which is to be transmitted over the serial channel and the bus state transition indicates that a bus state of the stream transitions from one state to another state in the stream;
- coding an indication of the bus state transition and the unit interval when the bus state transition occurs into a codeword;
- inserting the codeword into a portion of the frame;
- and
- transmitting the portion of the frame over the serial channel, wherein the stream is upstream or downstream, the frame is defined by a downstream portion, and after an idle interval, the frame is defined by an upstream portion, and the codeword is inserted into the corresponding upstream portion or downstream portion of the frame.

A device comprising:
- a stream circuit arranged to receive a stream for transmission over a serial channel;
- an encoder arranged to determine a bus state transition for the stream and a corresponding unit interval (UI) of a plurality of unit intervals when the bus state transition occurs in the stream,
- wherein the plurality of unit intervals defines a fixed duration of a frame which is to be transmitted over the serial channel and the bus state transition indicates that a bus state of the stream transitions from one state to another state in the stream;
- and
- code an indication of the bus state transition and the unit interval when the bus state transition occurs into a codeword;
- an aggregator arranged to insert the codeword into a portion of the frame;
- and
- a transmitter arranged to transmit the portion of the frame over the serial channel, wherein the stream is upstream or downstream, the frame is defined by a downstream portion, and after an idle portion, the frame is defined by an upstream portion, and the codeword is inserted into the corresponding upstream portion or downstream portion of the frame.
