Automatic configuration of virtual interfaces of a containerized network router, using hardware attributes

A method comprising:

• executing, by processing circuitry of a computing system comprising hardware-based physical interfaces, a virtual router that implements a data plane and is configurable with virtual interfaces;
• receiving, by the processing circuitry, information specifying one or more hardware attributes of each physical interface of the physical interfaces;
• for each physical interface of the physical interfaces, obtaining, by the processing circuitry, based at least in part on the corresponding one or more hardware attributes of the physical interface, a corresponding configuration for a corresponding virtual interface of the virtual interfaces of the virtual router;
• and
• configuring, by the processing circuitry, each virtual interface of the virtual interfaces with the corresponding configuration to cause the virtual router to perform forwarding of network traffic to the corresponding physical interface of the physical interfaces.

Non-transitory, computer-readable media comprising instructions that, when executed, are configured to cause processing circuitry to:

• execute a virtual router that implements a data plane and is configurable with virtual interfaces;
• receive information specifying one or more hardware attributes of each physical interface of physical interfaces of a computing system;
• for each physical interface of the physical interfaces, obtain, based at least in part on the corresponding one or more hardware attributes of the physical interface, a corresponding configuration for a corresponding virtual interface of the virtual interfaces of the virtual router;
• and
• configure each virtual interface of the virtual interfaces with the corresponding configuration to cause the virtual router to perform forwarding of network traffic to the corresponding physical interface of the physical interfaces.
