High density storage solutions demand a preamplifier for a writer with a fast rise time. The quality and speed of the writer depend on the rise time of a write current waveform. To improve the rise time, an improved base driver is implemented at the base terminal of an output transistor of an H-bridge amplifier circuit. The improved base driver has a push-pull driver, a current mirror circuit, and an alternating current coupled signal path. The improved base driver can create a dip in the voltage at the base terminal during a transition edge of a data signal and increase the base to emitter voltage of the output transistor when the output transistor is turning on. The result is a boost in the output current that is driving the writer, which reduces the rise time significantly.
