Providing advanced warning of upcoming changes in road conditions and geographic data to a vehicle driver

A vehicle system for providing advanced warning of upcoming changes in road conditions and geographic data to a vehicle driver, the vehicle system comprising:

• a sensor;
• an output device;
• and
• an electronic processor, the electronic processor configured to:
• determine a vehicle location;
• send to a connected maps database, the vehicle location, a heading of the vehicle, and a request for information regarding a current road condition and an upcoming road condition, wherein the current road condition is the condition of the road at the location of the vehicle and the upcoming road condition is the condition of the road within a predetermined distance of the location of the vehicle in a direction of the vehicle heading;
• receive information regarding the current road condition and the upcoming road condition from the connected maps database, wherein at least some of the information from the connected maps database is retrieved from a third party database by a database crawler;
• receive sensor data from the sensor regarding the current road condition and the upcoming road condition;
• execute a classifier to determine, based on the sensor data and the information received from the connected maps database, the current road condition and the upcoming road condition;
• compare the upcoming road condition to the current road condition to determine whether an upcoming change in road condition exists;
• and
• in response to determining the upcoming change in road condition exists, control the output device to alert a driver of a vehicle of the upcoming change in road condition and to control a change in vehicle operation in advance of the upcoming road condition.
