Apparatus for and method of generating a synthetic image as a function of a slide image

A method, wherein the method comprises:

• determining, using at least a processor, an illumination profile of an image capturing system by capturing a sensor white image;
• receiving, using the at least a processor, a slide image of a plurality of slide images;
• identifying, using the at least a processor, a background area of the slide image;
• generating, using the at least a processor, a synthetic slide white as a function of the sensor white image and a slide white estimate, wherein the slide white estimate is generated by:
• filtering, using the at least a processor, noise data from the slide image;
• extracting one or more illumination characteristics from the filtered slide image as a function of the identified background area;
• and
• estimating, using the at least a processor, spatial intensity variation across the slide image;
• modifying, using the at least a processor, the slide image using the synthetic slide white to compensate for illumination non-uniformity within the slide image;
• detecting, using the at least a processor, a deviation in the illumination profile based on a predefined threshold;
• and
• selectively triggering, using the at least a processor, capture of the slide white in response to the detected deviation.
