A storage device provides enhanced read performance in multiple modes. A controller on the storage device initializes the storage device in a first mode that does not support a host performance booster (HPB) feature and publishes HPB capabilities of a second mode to a host communicating with the storage device in the first mode. The controller configures a host memory buffer (HMB) in response to a command from the host, identifies a control mode for accessing the HMB, loads an L2P mapping for a HPB sub-region into the HMB, and returns HMB information associated with the L2P mappings in the HMB to the host. The controller also receives a HPB read command including logical and physical block addresses and a length retrieved by the host from the HMB and uses received information to retrieve data from a memory device without performing L2P address translation in the storage device.
