Network switches with photonic interconnect platforms

A switch comprising:

• a photonic circuit layer implemented in one or more first semiconductor chips, the photonic circuit layer comprising a first inner region of the photonic circuit layer and a first outer region, wherein the photonic circuit layer comprises waveguides and one or more optical couplers in the first outer region, wherein at least one waveguide of the waveguides is connected at one end to each of the one or more optical couplers;
• an electronic circuit layer implemented in a plurality of second semiconductor chips coupled to the one or more first semiconductor chips, the electronic circuit layer comprising a second inner region adjacent to the first inner region of the photonic circuit layer and a second outer region, wherein each second semiconductor chip comprises computing components arranged therein;
• a plurality of electro-optical transceivers arranged in the first inner region of the photonic circuit layer and the second inner region of the electronic circuit layer, wherein each electro-optical transceiver comprises an optical portion in the photonic circuit layer and a corresponding electrical portion in the electronic circuit layer, wherein each optical portion is connected to its corresponding electrical portion by electrical interconnects, and wherein at least one waveguide is connected at one end to the optical portion of each electro-optical transceiver;
• and
• a switching device that selectively electrically couples the computing components of different regions of the electronic circuit layer.
