Abstract
A micro-optical component includes a micro-substrate, a micro-optical element disposed on the micro-substrate, and a stand-off (a mechanical spacer) disposed on the micro-substrate or micro-optical component in a separate plane from the micro-substrate that at least partially encloses the micro-optical element. The micro-optical components can be stacked on a system substrate using micro-transfer printing to form a three-dimensional micro-optical structure. One more light beams can travel or pass through various combinations of multiple micro-optical components and micro-optical elements.

A micro-optical component, comprising:
- a micro-substrate;
- a micro-optical element disposed directly on the micro-substrate and extending from the micro-substrate in a direction;
- and
- a stand-off disposed on the micro-substrate or on the micro-optical element in a separate plane from the micro-substrate,
- wherein the micro-optical element is a passive optical component operable to modify light transmitted through an optical light path, and
- wherein the stand-off extends from the micro-substrate or the micro-element in the direction.
A micro-optical system, comprising:
- a system substrate;
- one or more micro-optical components disposed on the system substrate, each of the one or more micro-optical components comprising a micro-substrate, a micro-optical element disposed on the micro-substrate, and a stand-off disposed on the micro-substrate or on the micro-optical element in a separate plane from the micro-substrate, wherein each of the one or more micro-optical components is non-native to the system substrate, and
- wherein the one or more micro-optical components comprise a first micro-optical component comprising a first micro-optical element and a second micro-optical component comprising a second micro-optical element and wherein the first micro-optical component and the second micro-optical component are disposed such that a light beam directed from the first micro-optical element is received by the second micro-optical element.
A micro-optical system, comprising:
- a system substrate;
- one or more micro-optical components disposed on the system substrate, each of the one or more micro-optical components comprising a micro-substrate, a micro-optical element disposed on the micro-substrate, and a stand-off disposed on the micro-substrate or on the micro-optical element in a separate plane from the micro-substrate,
- wherein each of the one or more micro-optical components is non-native to the system substrate, and
- wherein the one or more micro-optical components comprise a first micro-optical component and a second micro-optical component and the first micro-optical component is disposed in contact with the second micro-optical component on the micro-substrate.
A micro-optical system, comprising:
- a system substrate;
- one or more micro-optical components disposed on the system substrate, each of the one or more micro-optical components comprising a micro-substrate, a micro-optical element disposed on the micro-substrate, and a stand-off disposed on the micro-substrate or on the micro-optical element in a separate plane from the micro-substrate,
- wherein each of the one or more micro-optical components is non-native to the system substrate, and
- wherein the one or more micro-optical components comprise a first micro-optical component and a second micro-optical component and the first micro-optical component is disposed on the micro-substrate and the second micro-optical component is disposed on the first micro-optical component such that the second micro-optical component is not in contact with the micro-substrate.
A micro-optical system, comprising:
- a system substrate;
- and
- one or more micro-optical components disposed on the system substrate, each of the one or more micro-optical components comprising a micro-substrate, a micro-optical element disposed on the micro-substrate, and a stand-off disposed on the micro-substrate or on the micro-optical element in a separate plane from the micro-substrate,
- wherein each of the one or more micro-optical components is non-native to the system substrate, and
- wherein the one or more micro-optical components comprises a first micro-optical component, a second micro-optical component, and a third micro-optical component disposed such that a first light beam directed from the first micro-optical component is received by the second micro-optical component and a second light beam different from the first light beam directed from the first micro-optical component is received by the third micro-optical component.
A micro-optical system, comprising:
- micro-optical components, each of the micro-optical components comprising a micro-substrate, a micro-optical element disposed on the micro-substrate, and a stand-off disposed on the micro-substrate or on the micro-optical element in a separate plane from the micro-substrate;
- and
- a system substrate, wherein each of the plurality of micro-optical components is disposed on and non-native to the system substrate.
