Abstract
A hydrojet rotary drill bit (10) is provided for drilling a hole in a subsurface formation. The bit body (12) includes a plurality of axially extending ribs (16a, b, c, d, e, and f) and a flow channel between adjacent ribs. A plurality of cutting elements are fixedly mounting on a respective one of the plurality of ribs. A plurality of flow nozzles (20a, b, c, d, e, and f) made on respective one of the plurality of ribs to direct fluid (mud) to a respective one of the plurality of cutting elements to clean and cool the cutting elements.
Claims18
A rotary drill bit for drilling a hole in a subsurface formation, comprising:
- a bit body having a central bore and a plurality of radially extending blades, each blade comprising a leading cutting face oriented in the direction of rotation, a trailing face opposite the leading cutting face, and an outer peripheral surface;
- a plurality of cutting elements, each fixedly mounted on the leading cutting face of each of the radially extending blades;
- a manifold located inside each blade for receiving a fluid flow from the central bore via an internal port, wherein each manifold comprises a flow line in fluid communication with the central bore and leading to an interior cavity of the manifold within the blade;
- and
- a plurality of fixed flow nozzles integrally formed within and positioned on the trailing face of each blade in fluid communication with the manifold, the fixed nozzles configured for creating and directing fluid jets across a flow channel between adjacent blades to a respective cutting edge of the plurality of cutting elements mounted on a rotationally trailing blade at a fixed angle relative to the trailing face;
- wherein the fluid flow is outputted tangentially to the profile of the bit body through the plurality of fixed flow nozzles to the respective cutting elements without initially contacting the borehole surface, and wherein the orientation of the fluid jets is configured to create rotational torque in the same direction as a torque applied to the drill bit.
A method of drilling a hole in a subsurface formation, comprising:
- providing a bit body having a plurality of radially extending blades with a flow channel between adjacent blades, the bit body further including a central bore radially inward of its peripheral edges;
- rotating the bit body within a subsurface formation to engage the subsurface formation with a plurality of cutting elements fixedly mounted on a leading cutting face of each of the blades;
- pumping a fluid through the central bore into a manifold located inside each blade;
- and discharging the fluid from the manifold through a plurality of fixed flow nozzles integrally formed within and positioned on a trailing face of each blade to direct fluid jets across the flow channel at a fixed angle relative to the trailing face to a respective cutting edge of the cutting elements mounted on a rotationally trailing blade without initially contacting a borehole surface, wherein an orientation of the high-speed fluid jets creates a rotational torque in the same direction as a torque applied to the drill bit.
A method of drilling a hole in a subsurface formation, comprising:
- providing a bit body having a plurality of radially extending blades with a flow channel between adjacent blades, the bit body further including a bit body flow path radially inward of its peripheral edges;
- fixedly mounting a plurality of cutting elements on a respective one of the plurality of radially extending blades;
- providing a blade's manifold for receiving fluid flow from the bit body flow path and outputting fluid through a plurality of flow nozzles to a respective plurality of cutting elements mounted on a following neighboring blade, the blade's manifold positioning each of the plurality of nozzles on a back side of the blades and facing to the cutters on the following blade;
- and
- providing the plurality of flow nozzles each in fluid communication with the bit body flow path for directing fluid to respective one of the plurality of cutting elements, wherein a plurality of fins are disposed within an interior plenum of the bit body flow path in the bit body, the fins defining:
- a base (B) corresponding to a distance between adjacent fins as located on the interior of the bit body plenum;
- a fin thickness (T);
- and a fin height (H) referenced to a location of the base, wherein a ratio of the base (B) to the thickness (T), B/T, is in a range from 3 to 7, and a ratio of the fin height (H) to the base (B), H/B, is in a range from 2 to 3;
- and
- drilling the hole.
