Abstract
The present invention relates to an erosion control apparatus and methods of using and installing the apparatus. The apparatus is constructed to prevent erosion of soil during typical weather or tidal conditions and adverse weather events. The apparatus can include a plurality of anchored rolls and soil lifts operative to stabilize the shoreline.
Claims25
An erosion control apparatus comprising:
- a plurality of fiber rolls, wherein the fiber rolls are biodegradable and arranged relative to a slope adjacent to a shoreline;
- a plurality of at least three helical anchors coupled to at least one of the plurality of fiber rolls such that at least three cables connect to the at least one fiber roll, each helical anchor coupled with at least one cable of the at least three cables to the at least one fiber roll, the plurality of at least three helical anchors being inserted at a depth into the slope in a direction away from the shoreline wherein at least one helical anchor provides a minimum holding force of at least 3000 pounds;
- and
- a fill material positioned between at least one of the plurality of fiber rolls and the helical anchors, at least one fiber roll of the plurality of fiber rolls being coupled to a soil lift containing at least a portion of the fill material within a fabric layer, the soil lift extending into the slope on a side of said at least one fiber roll in a direction away from the shoreline.

A method for stabilizing a shoreline comprising:
- assembling a plurality of biodegradable fiber rolls positioned on a shoreline to form an anchored fiber roll array having a plurality of anchors, the plurality of anchors comprising a plurality of at least three helical anchors coupled to at least one of the plurality of biodegradable fiber rolls with at least three cables connected to the at least three helical anchors and wherein a soil lift is coupled to at least one of the plurality of biodegradable fiber rolls, the soil lift comprising a layer of fabric containing a fill material and wherein one or more of the helical anchors are inserted through the soil lift in a direction away from the shoreline wherein the soil lift layer of fabric has a mesh opening size configured such that the one or more helical anchors are inserted through at least one soil lift and positioned at a depth in a slope at the shoreline, the soil lift being positioned within a cone overlying at least one of the plurality of anchors.
An erosion control apparatus comprising:
- a plurality of fiber rolls, wherein the fiber rolls are biodegradable and arranged relative to a slope adjacent to a shoreline to form an anchored fiber roll array;
- a plurality of at least three helical anchors coupled to at least one of the plurality of fiber rolls with a corresponding plurality of at least three cables, each helical anchor coupled with at least one cable of the at least three cables to the at least one fiber roll, at least one of the helical anchors being inserted at a depth into the slope in a direction away from the shoreline and extending beneath at least one of the plurality of fiber rolls;
- and
- a fill material positioned between at least one of the plurality of fiber rolls and the helical anchors wherein the fill material is compacted such that at least one helical anchor and attached cable provides a minimum holding force of at least 3,000 pounds to stabilize the at least one of the plurality of fiber rolls positioned within a cone overlying the at least one helical anchor and thereby stabilize the slope relative to the shoreline under conditions of slope soil water saturation.
