Abstract
A hybrid carbonaceous feed liquefaction process comprising an indirect conversion process and direct conversion and upgrading process is provided that provides for increased capacity and other advantages.
Claims47
A process comprising:
- a. modifying an indirect conversion process that comprises a syngas generation step and a product synthesis step by eliminating the product synthesis step;
- b. feeding a first carbonaceous feed to the syngas generation step of the indirect conversion process wherein it is converted into syngas that comprises CO, H2 and additionally at least one of N2 and CO2;
- c. treating the syngas to produce a hydrogen-rich feedstream by increasing the hydrogen content thereof;
- and
- d. feeding the hydrogen-rich feedstream as feed to a direct conversion and upgrading process, wherein the direct conversion and upgrading process comprises reacting the hydrogen-rich feedstream with a second carbonaceous feed in the presence of a catalyst to produce liquids.

- c. treating the syngas to produce a hydrogen-rich feedstream by increasing the hydrogen content thereof;
- and
- d. feeding the hydrogen-rich feedstream as feed to a direct conversion and upgrading process, wherein the direct conversion and upgrading process comprises reacting the hydrogen-rich feedstream with a second carbonaceous feed in the presence of a catalyst to produce liquids, wherein the direct conversion process produces an aromatic liquid product that comprises heteroatoms of S, O, and N, wherein the liquid product is reacted with a hydrogen-rich feedstream in a reactor system comprising multiple fixed bed reactors containing a hydrotreating or hydrocracking catalyst, wherein a first fixed bed reactor converts the heteroatoms of S, N, and O into H2S, H2O, and NH3 a second fixed bed reactor removes any residual S, O, and N compounds and partially converts aromatic compounds to naphthenes, wherein an effluent from the second reactor enters a fractionator where H2S, H2O, NH3, LPG, and naphtha are separated from the second reactor effluent, wherein a material boiling above naphtha is hydrogenated in a third reactor where aromatics are converted to naphthenes which meet diesel and jet fuel specifications or converted to naphtha rich in naphthenes and aromatics.

- b. feeding a first carbonaceous feed to the gasification step of the indirect conversion process wherein it is converted into syngas that comprises CO, H2 and additionally at least one of N2 and CO2;
- c. treating the syngas to produce a hydrogen-rich feedstream by increasing the hydrogen content thereof;
- d. feeding the hydrogen-rich feedstream as feed to a direct conversion and upgrading process for producing hydrocarbon products, wherein the direct conversion and upgrading process comprises reacting the hydrogen-rich feedstream with a second carbonaceous feed in the presence of a catalyst to produce liquids,
- e. separating such hydrocarbon products into different boiling point fractions, including a nominal 650 F.+(343° C.+) fraction;
- f. separating a portion of said 650 F.+(343° C.+) fraction into nominal 650° F. to 1000° F. (343° C. to 538° C.) and 1000 F+(538° C.+) fractions;
- g. mixing a portion of said 650 F.+(343° C.+) fraction and at least a portion of said 650° F. to 1000° F. (343° C. to 538° C.) fraction with solid carbonaceous material to form a slurry;
- h. pumping said slurry to an input of said direct liquefaction reactor with substantially no further heating of the slurry;
- and
- i. combining said pumped slurry with hydrogen that has been heated to temperature such that the temperature of the combined slurry and hydrogen being fed to the input of the direct liquefaction reactor to at least about 660° F. (349° C.).
