Abstract
Disclosed herein are embodiments of a system that combines supercritical water desalination with supercritical water oxidation in an integrated system. Also disclosed are method embodiments for utilizing the system and for producing purified water using the combination of supercritical water desalination with supercritical water oxidation. In particular embodiments, the method results in zero liquid discharge and the system can be used to generate purified water in combination with electricity.
Claims13
A system, comprising:
- a feed pump that pressurizes a feed water;
- a heater and/or a supercritical heat exchanger that is fluidly coupled to the feed pump to receive and pre-heat the feed water expelled from the feed pump;
- a boiler that is fluidly coupled to the heater and/or the supercritical heat exchanger, wherein the boiler receives the pre-heated feed water from the heater and/or the supercritical heat exchanger and heats the pre-heated feed water received from the heater and/or the supercritical heat exchanger to produce a supercritical feed that comprises supercritical water;
- a reactor that is fluidly coupled to the boiler to receive the supercritical feed from the boiler, wherein the reactor comprises an oxidant capable of inducing supercritical water oxidation so as to provide a supercritical water product comprising supercritical water, a gas, a salt, or a combination thereof;
- and
- a separator that is fluidly coupled to the reactor to receive the supercritical water product from the reactor, wherein the separator promotes separation of the supercritical water and the gas from the salt, wherein the salt is in a form of a hydrothermal concentrated brine.
