Abstract
A multilayer barrier film for food packaging comprises an outer layer comprising a retortable grade ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer; a sealing layer; and one or more inner layers located between the outer layer and the sealing layer. Excellent recovery of oxygen barrier post heat processing is achieved by these films and retortable containers made therefrom.
Claims10
A multilayer barrier film for food packaging comprising:
- an outer layer comprising 97% to 100%, by weight, of a retortable grade ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer;
- a sealing layer;
- an EVOH inner layer comprising a retortable grade ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer;
- a first inner layer comprising a polyamide that is between the outer layer and the EVOH inner layer;
- and a second inner layer comprising a polyamide the second inner layer being in direct contact with a tie layer that is in direct contact with the sealing layer,
- wherein the EVOH inner layer is in direct contact with the first and second inner layers;
- wherein the multilayer barrier film is not oriented;
- and
- wherein the multilayer barrier film exhibits retort-shock recovery characterized by an oxygen transmission rate of less than 45 cc/m2/day after exposure to 121 °C steam for 30 minutes and a 24-hour recovery period.

A multilayer barrier film for food packaging comprising:
- an unoriented outer layer comprising a retortable grade ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer;
- a sealing layer;
- an EVOH inner layer comprising a retortable grade ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer;
- a first inner layer comprising a polyamide that is between the outer layer and the EVOH inner layer;
- and a second inner layer comprising a polyamide and being in direct contact with a tie layer that is in direct contact with the sealing layer, wherein the EVOH inner layer is in direct contact with the first and second inner layers;
- the outer layer, the sealing layer, the EVOH inner layer, the first inner layer, the second inner layer and the tie layer are not oriented;
- and
- wherein the multilayer barrier film is printable and retains print integrity after retort processing.
