Abstract

A method, medium, and apparatus for educating and reducing risk to inexperienced drivers using vehicles with autonomous navigation systems. Data regarding a driver's past experience with vehicles and operating environments may be used to proactively warn the driver about a potential danger detected or predicted by the vehicle. An autonomous vehicle may prevent the driver from operating the vehicle under unfamiliar circumstances or from causing a collision. Data regarding a driver's past experience with vehicles and the safety features thereof may be used to mitigate risk of injury or property damage by selectively activating safety features in a new vehicle which the driver has not previously driven. Data regarding a driver's past experience with vehicles and safety features thereof may be used to determine a decreased or increased rental rate for a particular vehicle.

A method of autonomous vehicle control, the method comprising:

receiving, from a driver information database and at an autonomous vehicle control system of an autonomous vehicle, one or more driver experience parameters associated with a driver of the autonomous vehicle controlled by an autonomous vehicle control system;
collecting sensor data from one or more sensors of the autonomous vehicle;
detecting, by the autonomous vehicle control system using the sensor data and the one or more driver experience parameters, a driving condition representing an increased risk of damage represented by an inattentiveness of the driver;
and
in response to detecting the driving condition representing the increased risk of damage, changing between autonomous navigation and a manual driving mode.

one or more processors;
and
a non-transitory storage device storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the autonomous vehicle control system to:
collect sensor data using one or more sensors of an autonomous vehicle during a drive;
retrieve, from a driver information database, a plurality of driver experience parameters associated with a driver of the autonomous vehicle;
detect, using the sensor data and the plurality of driver experience parameters, a driving condition representing a risk of damage;
in response to detecting the driving condition representing the risk of damage, perform a first change between an autonomous navigation mode and a manual driving mode;
detect that the driving condition has ended;
in response to detecting that the driving condition has ended, perform a second change between the autonomous navigation mode and the manual driving mode;
and
update the plurality of driver experience parameters with the driving condition and an action taken by the driver during the drive.
