A non-transient, computer-readable medium storing instructions executable by a vehicle controller of a motor vehicle with a brake-by-wire (BBW) brake system, the BBW brake system including a brake motor configured to drive a brake actuator to thereby press a friction brake element against a rotating brake element, the instructions, when executed, causing the vehicle controller to perform operations comprising:
- receiving vehicle dynamics data indicating the motor vehicle is traveling in a forward direction;
- receiving, responsive to the motor vehicle traveling in the forward direction, advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) data and driving torque request (DTR) data;
- determining if the ADAS data indicates an ADAS warning event is detected and if the DTR data indicates an acceleration torque request was received to accelerate the motor vehicle;
- and
- commanding the brake motor to drive the brake actuator and thereby change a running clearance (RC) between the friction brake element and the rotating brake element to a reduced RC distance in response to detection of the ADAS warning event or to a first increased RC distance in response to receiving the acceleration torque request to accelerate the motor vehicle.
