Abstract
Disclosed is high conversion and high carbon yielding CARGEN catalyst and a method of preparing the same. The catalyst comprises transition metals that may be supported or unsupported. The preparation method involves mixing a metal material with or without a support in a standard ball milling apparatus to produce a fine and homogenous solid mixture of the transition metal oxide and support. The catalyst is used in the CARGEN system.
Claims6
A method of preparing a catalyst for a Carbon Generator Reactor (CARGEN) process, the method comprising:
- ball milling a catalyst mixture in a ball milling apparatus, wherein the catalyst mixture comprises a precursor material and a support material, wherein the precursor material comprises a nickel oxide material and the support material comprises Al2O3, wherein the ball milling apparatus comprises stainless steel balls of about 5 mm in diameter and 0.5 g in mass, wherein the nickel oxide material and the Al2O3 are milled at a rotation rate of 50 Hz at 250 rpm, wherein the ratio of the number of stainless steels balls in the ball milling apparatus to the weight of the catalyst mixture in grams is 10:1, and wherein a milling time is 1 hour;
- calcining the catalyst mixture at a temperature of 400 °C for 4 hours;
- and
- sieving the catalyst mixture at a 300 μm size,
- wherein the catalyst is utilized in the CARGEN process to produce a carbon material including multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT).
