Abstract
An electrified vehicle includes an energy storage system including a battery disposed within a battery housing and a control system. The control system is configured to detect an onset of a battery thermal event during a charging session of the energy storage system with an external power supply, in response to the onset of the battery thermal event being detected, perform a first action, and in response to the battery thermal event continuing to progress following the first action, perform a second action.
Claims9
An electrified fire fighting vehicle comprising:
- an energy storage system including a battery disposed within a battery housing;
- a battery cooling system including a first conduit positioned adjacent at least one of the battery or the battery housing, a coolant pump configured to selectively provide coolant to the first conduit, a second conduit positioned adjacent at least one of the battery or the battery housing, a first water pump configured to selectively provide a first portion of water from a tank to the second conduit, a supply port coupled to the second conduit, and a fluid diverter positioned along the second conduit;
- an electrically-operable component including a motor configure to drive a second water pump;
- and
- a control system configured to:
- detect an onset of a battery thermal event during a charging session of the energy storage system with an external power supply;
- and
- in response to the onset of the battery thermal event being detected:
- stop accepting a charge from the external power supply;
- deluge the battery housing by coupling the first water pump to the supply port so that the first water pump provides the first portion of water to the second conduit at a pressure that exceeds a pressure threshold of the fluid diverter and the fluid diverter opens or ruptures and supplies the first portion of water to the battery housing;
- run the motor to drive the second water pump to recirculate a second portion of water out of and back into the tank to drain a state of charge of the battery.
