Abstract
A sensor-enabled implant is disclosed. The sensor-enabled implant includes two endplates that are separated via a low stiffness body. A sensor is disposed within an implant body along a loading direction of the implant such that it measures a load applied to a loadbearing endplate of the implant.
Claims13
An interbody implant comprising:
- an upper endplate having a first surface and a second surface, wherein the upper endplate is configured to contact a first segment of tissue upon implantation;
- a lower endplate having a first surface and a second surface, wherein the lower endplate is configured to contact a second segment of tissue upon implantation;
- an implant body extending between the first surface of the upper endplate and the first surface of the lower endplate, the implant body comprising a three-dimensional lattice structure having a lower elastic modulus than an elastic modulus of the upper and lower endplates, and the upper and lower endplates being configured such that upon implantation, one of the upper and lower endplates is a loadbearing endplate;
- a cavity within the implant body;
- and
- a sensor disposed within the cavity along a loading direction of the implant such that a load applied to the loadbearing endplate is transferred from the loadbearing endplate, via the implant body, to the sensor.

A method for manufacturing a sensor-enabled interbody implant, the method comprising:
- manufacturing a first endplate having a first surface and a second surface, wherein the first endplate is configured to contact a first segment of tissue upon implantation;
- manufacturing a second endplate having a first surface and a second surface, wherein the second endplate is configured to contact a second segment of tissue upon implantation;
- manufacturing an implant body comprising a three-dimensional lattice structure having a lower elastic modulus than an elastic modulus of the first and second endplates;
- manufacturing a cavity within the implant body;
- coupling the implant body to the first and second endplates such that the first and second endplates are separated substantially only via the implant body;
- loading a sensor within the cavity in a loading direction of the implant such that a load applied to the loadbearing endplate is transferred from the loadbearing endplate, via the implant body, to the sensor.
