Ankle replacement system and method

A method comprising:

• coupling a cutting base to a resected surface of a first bone, the cutting base including a body defining a slot that extends transversely across the body, a first flange extending from the slot in a first direction and defining a first set of holes, and a second flange extending from the slot in a second direction that is opposite the first direction and defining a second set of holes;
• coupling a first cutting guide to the cutting base by inserting pegs of the first cutting guide into the first set of holes, the first cutting guide having a body defining a plurality of interconnecting holes that cooperate to form a slot having a width that is smaller than a width of the slot defined by the cutting base;
• plunging a reamer into each of the plurality of interconnecting holes defined by the first cutting guide;
• removing the first cutting guide from the cutting base;
• rotating the first cutting guide;
• coupling the first cutting guide to the cutting base by inserting the pegs of the first cutting guide into the second set of holes;
• and
• plunging a reamer into each of the plurality of interconnecting holes defined by the first cutting guide.

A method of resecting a bone for receipt of a prosthesis component, the method comprising:

• securing a cutting base to a surface of the bone, the cutting base having a body defining a slot, a slit within the slot, and first and second flanges extending from the slot in opposite directions, the first flange defining a first set of holes disposed near the slot and the second flange defining a second set of holes disposed near the slot;
• performing a chamfer resection of the bone by inserting a cutting instrument into the slit;
• coupling a first cutting guide to the cutting base in a first orientation by inserting pegs that extend inferiorly from the first cutting guide into the first set of holes;
• making plunge cuts through a plurality of holes defined by the first cutting guide using a reamer to form a first bone surface;
• removing the first cutting guide from the cutting base, rotating the first cutting guide, and coupling the first cutting guide to the cutting base in a second orientation by inserting the pegs into the second set of holes;
• and
• making plunge cuts through the plurality of holes defined by the first cutting guide using the reamer to form a second bone surface.
