System and method for writing into the memory of an active medical device implantable by telemetry

A method for enabling a writing operation in a memory of an implantable medical device comprising:

• determining, by a proximity sensor of an implantable medical device, whether a signal from a first external unlocking tool is detected when the first external unlocking tool is within a predetermined proximity perimeter of the implantable medical device;
• receiving, by an intermediate proximity device, from a second external unlocking tool, data or a signal;
• determining, by the intermediate proximity device, based on the received data or signal, whether the second external unlocking tool is identified;
• and
• receiving, by the intermediate proximity device, writing data for the implantable medical device;
• storing, by the intermediate proximity device, the writing data at least until authorization of the writing operation;
• in response to determining that a signal from the first external unlocking tool is detected and determining that the second external unlocking tool is identified, allowing an intermediate proximity device to write data to the implantable medical device by establishing a radio frequency communication between the intermediate proximity device and the implantable medical device and by writing the stored writing data to the implantable medical device;
• and
• in response to determining either that a signal from the first external unlocking tool is not detected or that the second external unlocking tool is not identified, preventing the intermediate proximity device from writing data to the implantable medical device by preventing establishment of the radio frequency communication and preventing writing of the stored writing data to the implantable medical device;
• wherein the second external unlocking tool comprises at least a biometric input received by the intermediate proximity device or a magnetic card read via the intermediate proximity device.

One or more non-transitory computer-readable storage media having instructions stored thereon that, upon execution by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

• determine, by a proximity sensor of an implantable medical device, whether a signal from a first external unlocking tool is detected when the first external unlocking tool is within a predetermined proximity perimeter of the implantable medical device;
• receive, by an intermediate proximity device, from a second external unlocking tool, data or a signal;
• determine, by the intermediate proximity device, based on the received data or signal, whether the second external unlocking tool is identified;
• receive writing data for the implantable medical device;
• store the writing data at least until authorization of a writing operation;
• in response to determining that a signal from the first external unlocking tool is detected and determining that the second external unlocking tool is identified, allow an intermediate proximity device to write data to the implantable medical device by establishing a radio frequency communication between the intermediate proximity device and the implantable medical device and by writing the stored writing data to the implantable medical device;
• and
• in response to determining either that a signal from the first external unlocking tool is not detected or that the second external unlocking tool is not identified, prevent the intermediate proximity device from writing data to the implantable medical device by preventing establishment of the radio frequency communication and preventing writing of the stored writing data to the implantable medical device;
• and
• wherein the second external unlocking tool comprises at least a biometric input received by the intermediate proximity device or a magnetic card read via the intermediate proximity device.
