Abstract
A cyanobacteria suppression composition includes: (a) a porous body including a plurality of pores; and (b) a growth promoting agent loaded into the pores of the porous body, wherein the growth promoting agent is effective to promote growth of microorganisms that compete with cyanobacteria for resources so as to be effective to suppress growth of the cyanobacteria. A method of preparing the composition and a method of using the composition to prevent harmful cyanobacterial blooms are also disclosed.
Claims6
A cyanobacteria suppression composition comprising:
- a porous body comprising a plurality of pores;
- a growth promoting agent loaded into the pores of the porous body;
- and
- a biodegradable coating at least partially surrounding an exterior surface of the porous body loaded with the growth promoting agent,
- wherein:
- the biodegradable coating is effective to delay a release of the growth promoting agent from the porous body upon exposure to water;
- the porous body loaded with the growth promoting agent and at least partially coated with the biodegradable coating is buoyant in water;
- and
- the growth promoting agent is effective to promote growth of microorganisms that compete with cyanobacteria for resources so as to be effective to suppress growth of the cyanobacteria in a body of water upon addition of the cyanobacteria suppression composition to the body of water.
