Wireless sprinkler valve system

A method comprising:

• generating, using a turbine within a housing of a wireless valve switch system, electrical power responsive to water flow through the turbine;
• storing the electrical power in a rechargeable power storage device in the housing of the wireless valve switch system;
• receiving, by a wireless component in the housing of the wireless valve switch system from a control system, during a wake power usage cycle and using the electrical power stored in the rechargeable power storage device, a first encoded message, wherein the wireless component operates and can receive wireless signals during wake power usage cycles and does not operate and can not receive the wireless signals during sleep power usage cycles;
• decoding, by the wireless valve switch system and using the electrical power stored in the rechargeable power storage device, the first encoded message to identify a first command;
• actuating, by the wireless valve switch system based on the first command and using the electrical power stored in the rechargeable power storage device, a sprinkler valve to an open position, wherein the sprinkler valve comprises a direct current (DC) latching solenoid;
• receiving, by the wireless component of the wireless valve switch system and using the electrical power stored in the rechargeable power storage device, from the control system, a second encoded message;
• decoding, by the wireless valve switch system and using the electrical power stored in the rechargeable power storage device, the second encoded message to identify a second command;
• and
• actuating, by the wireless valve switch system based on the second command and using the electrical power stored in the rechargeable power storage device, the sprinkler valve to a closed position.

A wireless valve switch system comprising:

• a housing;
• a turbine within the housing and to generate electrical power responsive to water flow through the turbine;
• a wireless component within the housing;
• a rechargeable power storage device within the housing to store the electrical power generated by the turbine, wherein the electrical power is used to power components of the first wireless valve system and to provide power to actuate at least one direct current (DC) latching solenoid valve;
• a memory in the housing;
• and
• a processing device in the housing and coupled to the memory, the processing device to:
• receive, by the wireless component via a wireless network during a wake power usage cycle and using the electrical power stored in the rechargeable power storage device, first encoded valve instructions that were encoded by a control system of a wireless sprinkler valve system using a key, wherein the wireless component and the processor operate and can receive wireless signals during wake power usage cycles and do not operate and can not receive the wireless signals during sleep power usage cycles;
• decode, using the electrical power stored in the rechargeable power storage device, the first encoded valve instructions using the key to generate decoded valve instructions;
• determine, using the electrical power stored in the rechargeable power storage device, whether the decoded valve instructions correspond to the wireless valve switch system;
• generate, using the electrical power stored in the rechargeable power storage device, a response to the decoded valve instructions;
• encode, using the electrical power stored in the rechargeable power storage device, the response using the key to generate an encoded response;
• and
• transmit, by the wireless component and via the wireless network, the encoded response to the control system to cause the control system to perform a corresponding action.
