Transmitting bluetooth audio data over a WI-FI link

A wireless communication device, comprising:

• one or more wireless radios;
• one or more processors coupled to the one or more wireless radios;
• and
• a memory coupled to the one or more processors and storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors in conjunction with the one or more wireless radios, is configured to:
• operate the wireless communication device as a wireless station (STA) associated with an access point (AP) concurrently with operating the wireless communication device as a software-enabled Access Point (softAP) paired with a peripheral device over a Bluetooth communication link;
• receive one or more first data packets over a Wi-Fi channel from the AP, the one or more first data packets carrying audio data intended for the peripheral device;
• process the audio data based at least in part on a Bluetooth profile stored in the wireless communication device;
• embed the processed audio data into Ethernet frames of a new Ethertype;
• encapsulate the Ethernet frames of the new Ethertype within one or more second data packets;
• transmit the one or more second data packets to the peripheral device over the Wi-Fi channel;
• and
• wherein execution of the instructions to process the audio data includes:
• routing the one or more first data packets to an application processor via a Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) bus;
• extracting raw audio data from the one or more first data packets using the application processor;
• encoding the raw audio data in an audio subsystem coupled to the application processor;
• and routing the encoded raw audio data from the audio subsystem to a WLAN subsystem over a direct link between the audio subsystem and the WLAN subsystem.
