Abstract
Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a device that includes: a processing system including a processor; and a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations of: creating a plurality of selection lists of network functions that provide services to user equipment in a communications network; choosing a first selection list of the plurality based on a type of service utilized by user equipment; selecting a first instance of a network function in the first selection list; and using the first instance to provide the network function. Other embodiments are disclosed.
Claims20
A device, comprising:
- a processing system including a processor;
- and
- a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations, the operations comprising:
- accessing a plurality of selection lists, wherein:
- each respective selection list in the plurality of selection lists is associated with a respective service type provided by a communication network,
- each respective selection list in the plurality of selection lists includes identifications of respective instances of a same type of network function for user equipment associated with the respective service type, and
- the respective instances of the same type of network function in each respective selection list are configured for the respective service type;
- identifying a first service type associated with a first user equipment;
- choosing a first selection list of the plurality of selection lists that is associated with the first service type;
- selecting a first instance of a network function in the first selection list;
- using the first instance to provide the network function;
- determining that a portion of the communication network is experiencing a network traffic event, wherein the plurality of selection lists comprises one or more customized selection lists that include customized instances of network functions to address the network traffic event;
- identifying a second service type associated with a second user equipment that is in the portion of the communication network;
- choosing a customized selection list of the plurality of selection lists that is associated with the second service type;
- and
- selecting a customized instance of a second network function in the customized selection list.

A non-transitory machine-readable medium, comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processing system including a processor, facilitate performance of operations, the operations comprising:
- creating a plurality of selection lists, wherein:
- each respective selection list in the plurality of selection lists is associated with a respective service type provided by a communication network,
- each respective selection list includes identifications of respective instances of a same type of network function for user equipment associated with the respective service type, and
- the respective instances of the same type of network function in each respective selection list are configured for the respective service type;
- identifying a first service type associated with a first user equipment;
- choosing a first selection list of the plurality of selection lists that is associated with the first service type;
- selecting a first instance of a network function in the first selection list in a round-robin fashion;
- using the first instance to provide the network function to the first user equipment;
- determining that a portion of the communication network is experiencing a network traffic event, wherein the plurality of selection lists comprises one or more customized selection lists that include customized instances of network functions to address the network traffic event;
- identifying a second service type associated with a second user equipment that is in the portion of the communication network;
- choosing a customized selection list of the plurality of selection lists that is associated with the second service type;
- and
- selecting a customized instance of a second network function in the customized selection list.

A method, comprising:
- creating, by a processing system including a processor, a plurality of selection lists, wherein:
- each respective selection list in the plurality of selection lists is associated with a respective service type provided by a communication network,
- each respective selection list includes identifications of respective instances of a same type of network function for user equipment associated with the respective service type, and
- the respective instances of the same type of network function in each respective selection list are configured for the respective service type;
- identifying a first service type associated with a first user equipment;
- choosing, by the processing system, a first selection list of the plurality of selection lists that is associated with the first service type;
- selecting, by the processing system, a first instance of a network function in the first selection list in a round-robin fashion;
- providing, by the processing system, the service using the first instance to the first user equipment;
- determining that a portion of the communication network is experiencing a network traffic event, wherein the plurality of selection lists comprises one or more customized selection lists that include customized instances of network functions to address the network traffic event;
- identifying a second service type associated with a second user equipment that is in the portion of the communication network;
- choosing a customized selection list of the plurality of selection lists that is associated with the second service type;
- and
- selecting a customized instance of a second network function in the customized selection list.
