Abstract
A process for forming a fluoride-based coating on an electrode material that is at least partially covered with a surface carbonate, includes disposing the electrode material in a reactor. The electrode material is exposed to a vapor of a fluoride-based precursor material such that the fluoride-based precursor material dopes the surface carbonate so as to form a layer of a fluoride coating on the electrode material.
Claims16
A method, comprising:
- disposing a cathode material comprising lithium that is at least partially covered with a surface carbonate comprising Li2CO3, in a reactor;
- and
- introducing a vapor of a fluoride-based precursor material comprising HF-pyridine into the reactor at a vapor pressure and dose time sufficient to react and convert at least a portion of the surface carbonate with the vapor of the fluoride-based precursor to lithium fluoride, to form a layer of a metal fluoride coating comprising lithium fluoride on the cathode material and remove the portion of the surface carbonate on the cathode material;
- wherein the reacting is performed at a temperature in a range of 40° C. to 250° C.;
- and the lithium of the lithium fluoride of the metal fluoride coating is from the Li2CO3.

A method, comprising:
- disposing a cathode material that is at least partially covered with a surface carbonate, in a reactor;
- and
- reacting a vapor of a fluoride-based precursor material comprising HF-pyridine with the surface carbonate, doping the surface carbonate with a vapor of a fluoride-based precursor, so as to form a layer of a metal fluoride coating comprising lithium fluoride on the cathode material and reducing an amount of the surface carbonate on the cathode material;
- wherein the reacting is performed at a temperature in a range of 40° C. to 250° C.;
- wherein the method does not include contacting the cathode material with a different precursor material.

A method, comprising:
- disposing a cathode material that is at least partially covered with a surface carbonate, in a reactor;
- and
- reacting a vapor of a fluoride-based precursor material comprising HF-pyridine with the surface carbonate, doping the surface carbonate with a vapor of a fluoride-based precursor, so as to form a layer of a metal fluoride coating comprising lithium fluoride on the cathode material and reducing an amount of the surface carbonate on the cathode material;
- sequentially repeating reacting the vapor of the fluoride-based precursor material with the surface carbonate for 1 to 10 times;
- wherein the reaching is performed at a temperature in a range of 40° C. to 250° C.;
- wherein the metal fluoride coating has a thickness in a range of 0.1 nm to 5 nm;
- wherein doping the surface carbonate is performed at a vapor pressure in a range of 0.1 Torr to 100 Torr;
- wherein the method does not include contacting the cathode material with a different precursor material.
