Abstract
Apparatus, systems, and methods of construction and use to produce linear, rotational or counter-rotational motion, acceleration, and actuation by the use of moveable ferromagnetic, electromagnetic, conductive, or permanent magnetic objects. The moveable objects are oriented to produce or to be acted upon by asymmetric electromagnetic field distributions, thereby resulting in motion of the magnetic objects. Further, exemplary embodiments and applications are described herein.
Claims14
An electromagnetic motor comprising:
- a permanent magnet having a wedge-shaped body that tapers from a first end portion having a first thickness to a second end portion having a second thickness, wherein the first thickness is greater than the second thickness;
- an armature comprising at least one coil, wherein the at least one coil is configured to, when energized, generate a magnetic field, and wherein the armature is configured to rotate relative to the permanent magnet when the at least one coil is energized;
- wherein the wedge-shaped body of the permanent magnet produces an asymmetrical magnetic flux distribution that has a higher flux density at the first end portion and a lower flux density at the second end portion;
- and
- wherein the magnetic field of the at least one coil of the armature, generated when the at least one coil is energized, interacts with the asymmetrical magnetic flux distribution to drive rotation of the armature as the at least one coil moves toward the higher flux density at the first end portion and away from the lower flux density at the second end portion.
2 more elements
An electromagnetic motor comprising:
- at least one permanent magnet producing an asymmetrical magnetic flux distribution along a face of the at least one permanent magnet, the asymmetrical magnetic flux distribution having a highest flux density region displaced toward a first end portion of the at least one permanent magnet and a lowest flux density region displaced toward a second end portion of the at least one permanent magnet, the second end portion opposing the first end portion;
- and
- an armature comprising at least one coil, wherein the at least one coil, when energized, is configured to generate a magnetic field that interacts with the asymmetrical magnetic flux distribution of the at least one permanent magnet to drive rotation of the armature relative to the at least one permanent magnet.
