In various embodiments, a process for database sharding based on a universally unique identifier (UUID) includes receiving a database record having a unique identifier comprising a first bit-field encoding an organization identifier and a second bit-field encoding a secondary identifier, wherein the unique identifier is utilized to uniquely identify the database record among other database records. The process includes extracting, for database sharding, the first bit-field and the second bit-field from the unique identifier; identifying a corresponding database shard for the database record based on the first bit-field and the second bit-field and a hierarchical relationship between the first bit-field encoding the organization identifier and the second bit-field encoding the secondary identifier; and routing the database record to the corresponding database shard for database storage balancing.
